The temple breathes differently since her entry, a whisper of stone and magic.

“You feel it too,” she whispers, her voice like the scraping of flint on obsidian. The words send a shiver across my nape.
I stare at her hands. The knuckles jut out like white cliffs, tendons straining—as if she wanted to tear the air, shred the space between us. “What exactly am I supposed to feel?” My own voice scrapes, foreign and hoarse, as if I haven’t used it in a long time.
“The transformation. The temple breathes differently since your entry. Don’t you hear it? The pulse beneath the stones?” She steps closer, and the scent of sage and something metallic wafts over to me—ancient, earthy, like blood on moss. Her armor is black leather, hugging her curves like a second skin, creaking softly with every movement. At her hip rests a dagger, its blade shimmering bluish in the flickering torchlight, as if harboring its own thoughts.
I am trapped in this place. The temple stretches in all directions, pillars covered in script I cannot decipher. And yet I know them—deep inside me, as if someone planted a melody I’ve never heard, but whose echo lives in my bones.
“I am Lyra,” she says. “And you are the Shifter. I’ve been waiting for you.”
“Waiting? You don’t know me.”
“I know your kind. You carry the wolf’s fur and the eagle’s blood. You are torn between forms, but here, in this temple, you will become one.” Her hand cuts through the air, and I feel a wave of warmth emanating from her fingertips—an invisible touch that makes my skin tingle. “The ritual begins with touch.”
My heart hammers against my ribs, a wild drummer. I want to step back, but my feet are nailed to the floor, the stone slabs seeming to hold me. “What ritual?”
“The one of the shifting flame. It unleashes the desire slumbering within us. You’ve suppressed it for years, in every one of your forms. I feel it—the pent-up heat beneath your skin. But the temple knows no lies. Here, everything that is real burns.” She is so close now that I can see the fine pores on her nose, the hint of sweat on her upper lip, the tiny pulse at her temple. “Touch me.”
The First Touch
I reach out my hand, hesitantly. My fingers meet her cheek, and the skin is glowing hot, as if she had a fever. A crackling runs through my arm, settling in my chest like a second heart. Lyra closes her eyes, and her lips part slightly, a gap full of promise. A sound escapes her, half sigh, half moan—deep, throaty, as if coming from another plane.
“Yes,” she breathes. “This is it. Finally.”
Her hand covers mine, pressing it harder against her face. I feel something change under my touch—the contours soften, her features blur, and for a moment I see a pattern of fur flash on her skin: silvery streaks that vanish again like a dream upon waking.
“You can shift too?” I ask, my voice rough, full of disbelieving wonder.
Lyra opens her eyes. Golden sparks dance in her irises, flickering like the torches around us. “In this temple, I can be anything. But right now, I want only one thing: to feel you. In every fiber, every hair, every breath.”
She takes my hand and guides it lower, over her neck, along the slender column of her throat, over her collarbone where the skin is thin and the pulse beats wildly, until it rests on the curve of her breast. The leather armor is thin there, pliable, and I feel the hard tip of her nipple beneath it, pressing against my palm, demanding and impatient. Lyra pushes against my hand, and a shudder runs through her body, wave-like, visible.
“Undress me,” she commands softly, but her voice holds nothing pleading. It is an invitation, a command that echoes in my blood. “I want to feel your skin on mine. No more barriers.”
My fingers don’t hesitate. They find the laces at her side with a certainty that surprises even me, loosening them with a skill as if I’ve done it a thousand times. The leather falls from her shoulders, revealing naked skin that shimmers in the dim light like mother-of-pearl, like moonlight on water. Her breasts are full, heavy, the nipples dark and hard, small and tight. A fine sheen of sweat lies on her skin, making it glisten. I lick my lips, tasting salt and desire.
Lyra smiles, a wild, hungry smile that bares her teeth. “Like what you see?”
I don’t answer, but lean forward and take one of her nipples into my mouth. It tastes of salt and something sweet, of the honey of time, of an ancient nectar. Lyra moans, a choked sound, her fingers burying themselves in my hair, pulling me tighter against her, demanding more. I suck, bite gently, circle the hard tip with my tongue, and her body trembles beneath me, jerking and tensing.
“More,” she pants. “Keep going. Don’t stop.”
Her hands roam over my back, digging into my shoulders, as I lean over her, pressing her against the pillar. The cold stone at her back, my hot tongue on her chest—the contrast drives her higher.
The Transformation
As I caress her breast, kneading the other with my hand and rolling the hard tip between thumb and forefinger, I feel something stir within me. The animal I am pushes upward, wants to break free from the human shell, to be released. But the temple holds it back, shapes it, channels the primal force in another direction. My skin begins to prickle, as if a thousand needles are stinging me, and when I look up, I see that Lyra’s body is changing too. Her arms are covered in fine, silvery hairs that shimmer in the flickering light, her eyes now glow bright like embers, like the eyes of a she-wolf in moonlight.
“Let it happen,” she whispers, her voice taking on a deeper, vibrating undertone. “We are here to become one. To dissolve the boundaries between us.”
She slips out of the rest of her clothes, and I do the same. My pants fall to the floor, the leather of my belt clattering on the stone. My shirt tears apart under her hands—she simply drove her nails into it and pulled until the fabric gave way. Naked, we stand facing each other, and I see that she too bears marks of the beast: faint stripes on her thighs, a tuft of fur at the small of her back, her fingers tipped with claws that glint in the torchlight.
